Floralina - Designed by Birgitta Salenius for Nordiska of Gothenburg, 1960.
Kit contains 1960's Nordiska print on contemporary linen, measuring approx 50 x 60cm, 7 x 14m skiens of linen threads. Two printed cards are included: one card with a photograph of the original artwork, an English translation of stitches used, and a brief history of its origins. The other card describes the 24 common stitches used by Nordiska in their kits.
The Swedish embroidery company Nordiska was founded in 1879 and continued to design patterns for over 100 years. Near two thousand hand drawn patterns from 1960 - 1969 were recently documented.
Floralina was originally printed on purple fine linen and was intended that is would be made into a cushion. Our linen fabric has been screen printed by hand in Sweden not far from the archive, and the linen thread is dyed by a master dyer who learned the trade as a young man.
The card enclosed shows the drawing made prior to production, we are still searching for the original colour chart from the 60's - therefore we invite you to improvise with thread colours and stitches.
